We can all agree that Job search is time-consuming. It is even more time consuming if you are in the consulting world. Starting from updating your resume every few months to taking countless number of interviews, the uncertainty can sometime be overwhelming. In addition to the uncertainty of your next job, if your recruiting partner doesn’t have the right expertise, it can not only waste your time but also bring down morale.
How often have you faced this scenario? Where the recruiter calls you multiple times to get a hold of you, promises you an amazing opportunity, and then they go silent. You are chasing them and wondering what happened. in this article, we go over how to identify if the recruiter you are working with will actually be transparent, have the right experience, and become a partner over the long-term.
Q. Do you work with organizations in the sectors that I am looking to work in?
A. This is important for applicants who have a desire to remain in the field that they have been working in for some time. If you have experience of working in the Retail IT field or IT Project Management field, ask your agent if he has connections in this sectors. You will only be wasting your time and energy if your agent does not have employers from Retail or Project Management sector.
Q. What are the best employers in your list?
A. It’s not difficult for a recruitment agency to find employment according to your skills and experience. But if you have a desire to work for top companies, it’s better to ask the agent about the best clients they’re working for. This gives an idea of the type of organizations you can hope to work with.
Q. What are your criteria for selection of candidates for job interviews?
A. Ask your agent how he shortlists candidates for job interviews? Is it solely based on the qualifications and experience mentioned on a resume? What are must-haves and nice-to-have? Any certification needs – for example, for Project Management jobs, employers may be looking for Project Management Certifications such as PMP, CSM, and others. This will give you an idea about the kind of jobs you can expect from your recruitment agency and how well they know the role. The last thing you want is them sending your profile to the hiring manager and wasting everyone’s time.
Q. How do you keep in touch with job seekers and how frequently?
A. It has been seen that many recruitment agencies rarely communicate with applicants except those that they have shortlisted for job interviews. It can be very demoralizing to hear nothing from your recruitment agency after you have submitted your resume and registered with it. It is better to get a clear answer from your recruitment agent in this regard, to know what you can expect from them in terms of feedback.
Q. Frequency of Job openings in line with my qualifications and experience in last six months?
A. This is an important question to ask if you do not want to waste your time and energy. You will know straight away if they work with roles you have expertise in.
